Ron Perlman tried, but Guillermo del Toro found his reading completely unusable

Story

A mysterious device designed to provide its owner with eternal life resurfaces after four hundred years, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. In an interview included in the Criterion edition of this film, Ron Perlman discusses how Angel was supposed to speak fluent Spanish. So, the character was changed to an American expat who hates being in Mexico so much, that what little Spanish he speaks is deliberately bad. When Jesus looks for Aurora after she takes the Cronos, as he passes through two doors, he stops.

Some explicit nudity has been added to the US video release

Behind him, reflected in the glass of the door, are the crew and equipment. [discussing why Deiter wants the Cronos] Jesus Gris: He thinks it will help him live longer. Angel de la Guardia: [laughs] That son of a bitch does nothing but shit and piss all day, and he wants to live longer? While the main US theatrical release contains a prologue and snippets of dialogue in English, a secondary market release will be entirely in Spanish.

Appeared in Masters of Horror (2002)

Die Schöne MüllerinFranz SchubertArreglov: Charlotte Georg (and Lee Ashley) BMIEditor: Software Music BMICourtesy of Capitol Productions Music – Ole Georg. When antique dealer Jesús finds the legendary Cronos device inside a statue, he accidentally uses it. It feeds on its life force in exchange for eternal life. However, wealthy Dieter and his nephew Angel also want the device and are willing to do anything to get it.

The action never feels really imminent and is a bit forced in a way

This is definitely a different take on the vampire story, it dispels a lot of the blood, castles, Igor etc., but keeps the sunlight, death through the heart etc. The story moves very slowly and focuses on Jesus and the devices effect on him. His accidental transformation causes concern in his granddaughter and she discovers that eternity comes at a price. The scenes between Jesús and Aurora are touching and a nice change from the blood-soaked scenes.

Overall it’s an interesting retelling of a famous story

Pearlman’s character is a good addition to the story but moves so slowly that it may be a disappointment to those expecting a horror film. Luppi is good as Jesus, obsessed with a gift he never wanted, Tamara is also strong as his granddaughter. The direction is impeccable although the story sometimes feels aimless and adrift.
