Partenope is a woman named after her city. Is she a siren or a myth? In Greek myth, Partenope is a siren who committed suicide after failing to enchant Odysseus. Her body was washed up by the tide to the place where Castel dell’Ovo is built today, and thus gave its name to the city that later became Neapolis, Naples. A little disappointed with his last film È STATA LA MANO DI DIO, PARTHENOPE reminded me of what moved me so much about Sorrentino’s films. Everything is beautiful, from the city of Naples and its crystal-clear waters to the still unknown goddess Celeste da Porta. Add to this Fellini-esque shots and a wonderful jazz soundtrack by Lele Marchitelli: it’s perfection. The beauty of life in its insignificance… You’d think he was shooting the next GRANDE BELLEZZA, but he wasn’t. Sorrentino manages to surprise us once again with a new way of dealing with what is ultimately the same subject. The film poses questions without ever answering them, as if to say that we should stop looking for answers and start observing the beauty of the world as it is. As a result, the viewer leaves the theater not with answers, but with an interesting perspective on life and, ultimately, death… Oh, and I almost forgot, the film stars Gary Oldman. Although his screen time is limited, he manages to deliver a great performance. Then he steps back, as if urging us to enjoy the film he convinced us to see (by being part of the cast). I know that not everyone will like it (some scenes are quite strange, I must admit), but for me this film gave me everything I expected (and didn’t expect) when going to the theater. I sincerely hope/believe it will win the Palme d’Or. Thanks Paolo 😉
